Targeting and triggers
Popup targeting rules for the right person, at the right second
Popup targeting rules decide who sees a widget, where and when. Every AutoSocialProof widget has 9 display triggers, nine page rules, audience filters for location, device, browser and language, plus frequency caps, schedules and focus mode.
Which display triggers can you use?
Nine, and each widget uses one. Pick the trigger that matches what the visitor is doing, not what you wish they were doing.
| Trigger | What it waits for | Good for |
|---|---|---|
| Delay | Show after N seconds on the page. | Recent sales, live counters |
| Time on site | Total time across the pages you target in one browsing session. | Offers for engaged visitors |
| Pageviews | After the visitor has seen N pages. | Email collector for returning readers |
| Page inactivity | When the visitor stops moving or scrolling for N seconds. | Gentle help or a reminder |
| Page scroll | After scrolling a percentage of the page. | Feedback at the end of an article |
| Element visible | When a CSS selector becomes visible, plus an optional delay. | Reviews next to the price box |
| Mouse click | When a visitor clicks an element you choose. | A video when "Watch demo" is clicked |
| Mouse hover | When the pointer hovers an element. | A tip on a pricing column |
| Exit intent | When the pointer heads for the browser bar on desktop. | Coupon or email collector |
How do page rules work?
Page rules match the URL or the page text. Combine as many as you need; leave them empty to show the widget everywhere the pixel runs.
Example: show reviews where the URL contains /products/, but not where it starts with /products/gift-card.

Targeting and trigger questions
What is a display trigger?
A display trigger is the condition that makes a widget appear: a delay, scroll depth, time on site, pageviews, inactivity, an element becoming visible, a click, a hover or exit intent. Each AutoSocialProof widget has exactly one trigger plus optional frequency and delay rules.
Does exit intent work on mobile?
Exit intent relies on the pointer moving toward the browser bar, which only exists on desktop. On phones use scroll depth, time on site or inactivity instead, and limit the exit-intent widget to large screens.
Can I show a popup only on certain pages?
Yes. Add page rules such as "URL contains /products/" or "does not start with /checkout", or "page contains" a piece of text. Rules can be combined.
Can I show different widgets to different countries?
Yes. Each widget can be limited to continents, countries and cities, so a UK notice and a US notice can live in the same campaign.
How do I stop a popup from annoying returning visitors?
Use display frequency (all the time, once per session or once per browser) and the "after close" and "after submit" rules, which can hide a widget for good or until a number of pageviews or minutes have passed.
Can I schedule widgets for a sale?
Yes. Set a start and end date and the widget only runs inside that window.
What is focus mode?
Focus mode darkens the page behind a widget so it stands out. You choose whether clicking outside closes it, whether it locks until the visitor interacts, or whether it is visual only. Use it sparingly.
Can a widget wait for a minimum amount of activity?
Yes. Counter and conversion widgets have a minimum activity setting so they stay hidden until the number is worth showing.
Do targeting rules cost extra?
No. Every plan, including Free, has every trigger and targeting option.
